Prof. Dr. Kjell Nilsson
Open lecture:
Sociology in Sweden
In this lecture an overview of the history of sociology in Sweden will be presented. After a brief look at the pre-WW2 background, the lecture focuses on the establishment of sociology in the Swedish university system in the 1940s and 1950s, the reorientation during the radical and critical 1960s when also gender studies emerged as an important area, the crisis in the 1970s and 1980s, and the challenges that transformations in Swedish society and university organization posed to Swedish sociology. The history of Swedish sociology reflects its close relation to the development of the welfare state and gender relations. The lecture will also describe current developments of sociology in relation to changes in the Swedish society and academy in the 21st century.
